What do the CEFR levels mean?

The Common European Framework of Reference is the international standard for describing language ability โ€” used by the Goethe-Institut, telc, ร–SD, universities, and employers across Europe. It describes what you can do in six levels across four skills, rather than reducing you to a test score. A learner is often at different levels in different skills.

The four skills (five, technically)

CEFR tracks each skill independently โ€” most self-taught adults are uneven, typically Reading > Listening > Writing > Speaking.

  • Listening โ€” understanding spoken German
  • Reading โ€” understanding written German
  • Speaking โ€” conversation & presenting
  • Writing โ€” producing written German

How long does each level take?

Typical guided-study hours (Goethe-Institut guidance). Real numbers vary a lot with prior experience and immersion.

  • A1 โ€” 80โ€“200 h  ยท  A2 โ€” +120โ€“200 h
  • B1 โ€” +150โ€“250 h  ยท  B2 โ€” +250โ€“400 h
  • C1 โ€” +200โ€“400 h  ยท  C2 โ€” +200โ€“400 h
